What should I expect from drinking Ionized Alkaline Water?

Ionized water provides your body with lots of oxygen, which is why it gives us energy. Ionized Water is much smoother tasting than conventional water. It makes better coffee, tea, juice, etc. Alkaline Water is wonderful to cook with because it helps hydrate the food and bring out its flavor. Can a person become too Alkaline from drinking Ionized Alkaline Water?

People have been known to drink as much as three and up to six liters of Ionized Alkaline Water every day and gotten great benefit from it. And they have not appeared to become too alkaline. On the contrary, one of the most common imbalances people have today that leads to health problems is that they are too acidic. Our blood pH should be approximately 7.35. The more acidic we are, the greater opportunity we have provided disease to flourish in us. In fact, it is rare for a person to acquire Alkalosis, the condition of being too alkaline. We should always drink Alkaline Water and eat Alkaline Foods such as fruits and vegetables.

How much Ionized Alkaline water should I drink?

This varies according to which expert you speak with. But a rule of thumb is to divide your total body weight in kilograms by 30. The result gives the number of liters of water you should drink each day. So a person of 60 kg should be, based on this formula, drinking two liters of water a day and so forth.
You should start slowly, starting to drink 1-3 glasses per day for the first week. If you are not experiencing side effects you can slowly increase the number of glasses a day during the first week. If you do not feel any flu-like symptoms at the end of the first week, you can increase the amount further the following week. The more ionized water you can drink, the better it is for you because water is more alkaline, providing more detoxification, and a stronger anti-oxidant that gives your body more oxygen.

How can I measure my own acid-base balance?

At the pharmacy or in health food stores you can buy some litmus paper that can be used to measure pH in urine. But this can provide an uncertain picture of your acid-base balance, because the pH change much from what you eat. Similarly, a possible leaching of alkaline minerals can give an indication you have a high alkaline environment, but actually you are getting more "acid" because the body disposes of its alkaline buffers.
A better method is to measure the pH of saliva, preferably at the same time each day, eg. between the hours 10 and 11
Saliva pH is more constant and therefore a better expression of how the environment is in you. The pH of saliva should preferably be at 7.4 to 7.6, for there is equilibrium. So high a pH is not seen as often, usually it lies at 6.8 to 7.2.

Does Ionized Alkaline Water have any negative effects?

Absolutely none as long as it is used properly. Only alkaline water should be drunk. Never drink acidic water but acidic water can be advantageously used to wash your skin.

BUT - we must caution you, your cells may have been literally starving for hydration for a long time (even though you drink a lot of water). With Ionized Alkaline Water the cells hydrate quickly and start to throw out all the accumulated toxins and other crud that they have been storing for a long time. This can result in flu-like symptoms. So take it slow at first.

Why do some people have flu like symptoms when first drinking Ionised Alkaline Water?

If you start drinking alkaline ionized water at a high level (high pH), you may experience flu-like symptoms. Ionisation process creates water molecule clusters, which is only half the size of ordinary water molecule clusters. This is why ionized alkaline water is sometimes called "reduced water" because it has been reduced in size from a 12 water molecule cluster to a 6 water molecule cluster. This makes the water much more hydrated because it flows through our tissue more easily, thus pushing toxins out of our system. It is this detoxifying effect that sometimes gives people headaches and diarrhea in the beginning.
